How to wear kimono jackets without looking like in the pyjama

How to wear kimono

Kimonos are super trendy and the Asian inspiration is quite clear. What is not very clear though is how to wear kimono without looking like you are wearing pyjamas. You really need to be quite careful. You really don’t want to end up looking like you didn’t have time in the morning to put on decent clothes and thought that no one will notice. Even though I must admit seeing the beautiful Gigi Hadid wearing regular pyjamas, I might change my mind. But she is a supermodel and supermodels get away with fashion statements like this one. Regular people hardly ever do. Well just think for a second. Can YOU REALLY show up in the office wearing pyjamas? Do you really think your boss would appreciate your sense of style? Well I don’t think so, unless you happen to work in fashion industry. But don’t you worry, there is a hope for us mortals, who like to be fashionable without turning heads for all the wrong reasons.

How to wear kimono:

If you really like the look, but are not sure how to wear kimono, just follow these simple rules.

  1. Choose a fabric that is slightly heavier than it would be on pyjamas, as this would hold the shape better. Heavier fabric will also favours your figure .
  2. Choose a kimono with lining. If nothing else, it will be very clear for everyone that this is NOT a pyjama (have you seen pyjamas with lining?)
  3. Choose a print that would not be associated with good night sleep at the first sight (leave the stripy ones at home)
  4. Shape and length. That is really up to your own preferences. As far as it fits like a glove, go for it.
  5. What to wear it with. Depending on your print and colour, you can wear kimonos during the day as well as for dinner dates. In the pictures I am wearing the kimono as a day to evening look. I would wear this to the office as I keep the rest simple, plain and neat. Also I am happy to wear this for a nice dinner in in the evening, as the trousers give the whole outfit more elegant look, while the blush pink top tone it down for the day in the office.
  6. I like wearing kimono both with or without a belt. Belt creates more tailored look while the look without belt looks more relaxed.

My sister just bought me a kimono, and I have never worn one before. I would like to make sure that I am wearing it right, so that will look good on me. It’s good to know that when I wear I need to think of the clothes underneath to make sure that it matches the pattern and colors of the kimono.
