Hmmm cullotes. Where to begin. Let me rewind year or two (can’t even remember) back when I notice them on the street, on real people (not supermodels in editorial). I must confess, I laughed and quite loudly. I thought to myself how unflattering this is. It is like a tailor ran out of fabric. I just couldn’t understand why on Earth would anyone wear THEM?

Well let’s go back to now. I now have two pairs and I am not finished. I can’ t wait to buy more for summer (yes, really). So how this all happened? I made a wow that I will start to try on things that I would never ever try in the past. Even if it would be just for my own entertainment when I am shopping. So I actually tried on one pair of cullotes thinking “this will be hilarious…” but then I tried them on and I didn’t laugh but I actually kind of liked it (what a shock for me ). I spent in the shop such a long time, it was almost embarrassing. But then even my husband loved it. So to cut it short. I now happen to love them and wear them whenever I can. So in case you are thinking of buying cullotes, I have for you few rules how to choose the right pair for you.

How to wear cullotes

My 4 rules of how to wear cullotes and still look chic:

  1. The overall length. Unless you have super long legs, go for really high waist and ideally quite long, just above your ankles. Think about it this way. How much you cut from the bottom, that is how much you can make up with the high waist. You should not compromise on your body proportions. You can actually even help it.
  2. Where those cullotes end. Think about the shape and size of your calf. Try to avoid buying a pair that ends exactly where your calf if largest. It is definitely not flattering and it will add you kilograms (who would want that, right?)
  3. The width and cut. Think about your hips, bottom and legs. If you are very thin, you can get away with more “baggy” look. If that is not the case, try to find a pair that is very tailored around the hip area and choose rather thicker fabric that “hangs” well.
  4. The styling. I personally like to pair it with short tops or anything I can put inside of the cullotes. That is how you don’t compromise your figure. In terms of shoes it goes very well with heels but also sneakers look great for more relaxed look. Just make sure you have really nice sneakers.
