What to wear to a black tie event. Complete guide to dress code rules.

It is again the time of the year that party invitations are coming from left and right. The party season is here and with that also the dilemma what to wear. There are limitless choices for dresses in the shops, so I am not worry about you now being able to choose one. But what if you have just received an invitation for a black-tie party? I am in the middle of the planning my birthday party, which will be in black tie and that made me think. Does everyone know what to wear? And maybe your New Years Eve party is in black tie. So do you know what are the rules for the dress code?

I feel like recently people bend the rules a bit too much. And I can’t help myself but wonder. Why so many women (and some men) dress far too casually for a black tie event? Is it because the society is more relaxed (and accepts that), or because women just don’t want to dress that formally anymore or are they simply not quite sure what exactly does it mean? Whatever the reason, I just think that it is a wonderful opportunity to dress formally and beautifully.

Black tie dress code rules for men

  • What should men wear? Well finally there is a dress code for men, that a bit more complicated than usually.
    1. Black (ideally wool) dinner jacket, also called tuxedo in USA. It can be both single breasted or double breasted. White shirt with Marcella collar with cufflinks and studs (white plain silk shirt is also an option, but no other colour). Black trousers with single row of braid down each leg. Black silk bow tie, no ties!
    2. There are nowadays also more modern variations. Dinner jacket can be made from dark blue, green or burgundy velvet. In terms of shoes, men can wear now velvet slippers, but ideally embroidered with crest.

Black tie dress code rules for women

  • And for woman? These are the rules that every woman should know.
    1. Long or short? Long is always a safe bet. You can wear a short though still it should not be a mini. Knee length (or just below) is good. And now the colour. Black tie doesn’t mean you have to wear a black dress (or skirt). Black colour doesn’t add the formality, it is all about the cut and design. I love this one from L.K. Bennett for example.
    2. If it is a sitting dinner, avoid very high splits (for obvious reasons), very tight skirts or dresses (not very comfortable to sit in) as well as huge volume (also not comfortable to squeeze everything under the table.
    3. Tights or no tights? Yes, wear tights, sheer or black. If you have a long dress, you can get away with no tights, but we are here to clarify the rules, right? And the rules are tights.
    4. Cleavage should be decent. You are not going to the night club, but black tie, formal event. So, leave your deep-up-to-waist cleavage at home.
    5. Both fine jewellery and costume jewellery are fine. (no tiaras).
    6. If you absolutely hate wearing a dress or skirt, you can wear trousers. However, go for the palazzo style trousers (very wide, loose legs from the waist).
    7. Last, but not least. Leave all the big bags at home and wear a clutch.

And the best thing is, you really don’t need to spend an absolute fortune. I found for you the perfect dresses here for every budget. You will find dresses in all sorts of shapes, colours and lengths. Just make your pick. And on the top of that, I found for you great shoes and bags to splurge on (or to save on).

Here are the best boots trends you should pay attention to this season

The winter is now full on, especially with the loads of snow we got in the last couple of days. Not that I complain 😊 So if you haven’t yet bought your perfect boots, now is your time. Yes, but which ones to buy? And where to buy them? That is probably your question right now.

Well not all of us have time to constantly look for something new and that’s also why you are now reading this. This time I have for you the best boots trends you should quickly adopt before the winter is over.

Best boots trends this season

Slouch boots

Oh so been there when I was a teenager, but love them anyway. The trick is to find the right high for your calf. The best one will end at the widest part of your calf. I know, sounds weird, but actually it helps to make your calf looks smaller. If the slouch boots finish just below the widest part, your legs will look much bigger. I bought mine here.

Bag: Chanel (similar here and cheaper option here and here), Boots: Kurt Geiger (similar here), Leather skirt: Kookai (similar here), Sweater: 360Cashmere, (similar here)

Silver boots

This winter is all about metallic colours (again). Metallic boots are the one to look at if you want to make a statement. There are many different types and shapes, that you will not have a problem to choose one. Whether you go for high boots like these one here or here, or ankle boots like the ones here or here or here. The fact is, these are one of the best boots if you want to stand out from the crowd.

Boots: Office (similar here and here or here), Jeans: Zara (similar here, here and here)

Lace up boots

This is not completely new trend, however this winter somehow this one is more popular than ever. These boots are sexy, cool and goes really well with everything. I particularly love wearing them with trousers, as it feels like they sand out more.

Bag:  Chanel Classic (similar cheaper option here), Lace up boots: Pura Lopez (similar here, here and here), Trousers: Liu:Jo (similar here or here)

White boots

Ok so this one is definitely unexpected for me. When it comes to boots, for years I just think of white boots as utterly unflattering, cheap looking things. However I must say this year I got myself a pair and absolutely love them. It also might be the due to fact, that they are not crisp white but very off white. So if you like this trend, I would suggest to definitely find a pair that is off white and more importantly, made from good leather. Make sure, you get a good quality off white boots, like the ones I am wearing on the pictures. They are on sale now here as well! And they are very comfortable.

Bag: Tod’s (similar here or here), Boots: Kurt Geiger ( or similar here, here or here), Fringe jeans: Zara (similar here or here), Gilet: Pinko (similar here), Shirt: Zara (similar here)

Eighties are back and this Topshop coat with mutton sleeves is a must have.

Did you hear? Eighties are back with their mutton sleeves trend. Great news, right? Mutton sleeves are actually much older than that. They started already at the beginning of the 19th century and since then they just keep coming back once in while, like any other good trend. Mutton sleeves are the ones that starts with an accumulation of a lot of fabric slightly below the shoulder and than get tight again at the wrist area. You can now see this trend popping up everywhere and Topshop even came up with an amazing winter coat. When I saw it first, I thought it looks rather enormous and just baggy. But when I tried this Topshop coat I could see how chic it was. There are many different blue coats, but this one with mutton sleeves is my favourite.

Topshop coat with mutton sleeves

I love the way it emphasise the hourglass figure, even if you don’t have one.  it looks great open as well, but I really like to make the belt quite tight. It has a great length, just below knees. That makes it a great coat for dresses and knee length skirts. My favourite look is to wear it with a turtleneck sweater underneath, ideally white or off white like this one or this one. The white makes the coat stand out a bit more. Simple blue jeans and Sergio Rossi boots makes the whole look very effortless and chic. The winter headband is just cherry on the cake, however I can imagine you might like to choose to wear it with one of those big winter scarfs, like this one.

When it comes to coats, I always follow my rule to always go for good quality over a trend. Last year it was all about classics with a beige coat. This year it is Topshop coat which combines both the trend with the quality. In the end of the day, if you choose well, you have a beautiful coat that lasts for at least few years.

Coat: Topshop (also similar in pink here ), Jeans: Zara (similar here and here), Boots: Sergio Rossi (similar here and cheaper option here), Sweater: El Corte Ingles (very similar here and here), Headband: Zara (similar here and here)

These luxury slippers with sheepskin are so cosy you will never take them off

I want to start this post with a question to you. What do you wear on your feet when you are at home? Do you wear shoes, or slippers? Or perhaps neither? When I lived in Spain, I was walking barefoot in the house most of the time. But here in UK, I am constantly cold. For a long time, I couldn’t find anything that would look nice and chic and as well be warm and comfortable. Then I got an opportunity to review these Morlands luxury slippers and when I saw the options on their website, I was sold. I finally felt like all my requirements were met. Pretty (tick), comfortable (tick), warm (tick), luxury (tick). And there is one point extra as well – they have a rubber sole. Carrying around a toddler makes me now far much more confident that I will not slip down the stairs.

Morlands luxury slippers

Now let me tell you something more about these luxury slippers. The outside is made of beautiful and thick suede and has a rubber sole. The inside is fully lined with luxurious, high-quality sheepskin. When you walk in them you feel like your feet are not even touching the floor. That is how soft and cosy they are, and I don’t want to take them off.

You can choose from many different styles and beautiful colours. I chose mine to be in chesnut shade as it gives even more luxurious feeling. They run a tiny bit big. I am between sizes, which normally it means I would go for the bigger one. However, it was the right choice to get in the end the smaller ones.

You can choose from a contemporary line or more traditional, heritage line. They also offer wide selection for men as well as range for outdoors. You can buy them directly from Morlands web site and they will be delivered to you in a nice box with each shoe in its own dust bag and with a shoe horn. A little touch to enhance the quality.

So do you already have a cosy Christmas present? Just saying…… 😉

Have a lovely day
